Walsall player 335. Arthur Haddleton

Arthur Haddleton (6 April 1910 – 5 January 1971) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward for various clubs in the 1930s. Despite showing promise in the early part of his career, he eventually achieved very little, although he did score in eight consecutive matches in 1931.
Haddleton was born in Chester-le-Street in County Durham and worked in the coal-mines, playing football for various colliery sides in the north east including Easington Colliery Welfare and Horden Colliery Welfare. He was spotted by scouts from Southampton and moved to the south coast in October 1930. He made an immediate impression at The Dell, scoring eleven goals from seventeen games for the reserves. He made his first-team debut in a 1–0 defeat in the Second Division at Bury on 18 April 1931. The following season, he replaced the injured Willie Haines after the first match of the season. He scored in a 3–2 victory over Manchester United on 2 September and then scored at least once in each of the next seven games. This run of nine goals in eight consecutive matches remains a club record.. After scoring against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 3 October, he then only scored once more in the next five games. He was initially replaced by Ted Drake, who had also made a name for himself in the reserves, and only made a further three appearances for the “Saints” first-team, spending the rest of the season back in the reserves.
At the end of the season, he was one of three players (together with fellow forwards Bill Fraser and Bert Jepson) who were sold to Fulham as the Saints were in serious financial difficulties and needed to raise funds.
In his brief career at Southampton, Haddleton made 17 first-team appearances, scoring ten goals. At Fulham, Haddleton scored twice on his debut and added two more goals from three matches, but was unable to displace Frank Newton as a regular in the side.
In the summer of 1933, he move to Swindon Town where he was moved to an inside forward role, with either Tommy Armstrong or Fred Fisher in the centre, but failed to score in seven matches.
He moved again in July 1934, this time to the Midlands to join Walsall where he was played at outside right alongside prolific goal-scorer Gilbert Alsop. After 15 appearances in the Third Division North, in which he scored four goals, Haddleton fractured his leg and was eventually forced to retire. On abandoning his career as a professional footballer, Haddleton returned to Hampshire to live in Eastleigh where he was employed at the Pirelli General cable works, turning out for the works team. He died at Eastleigh in 1971, aged 60.

Walsall player 330. Ashley James Grimes

Ashley James Grimes (born 9 December 1986) is an English footballer who plays for Walsall. He normally plays as a striker or attacking midfielder.
Born in Swinton, Greater Manchester, Grimes began his footballing career with Barr Hill Lads’ Club in Salford before signing for Manchester United where he spent two years in the academy before signing for Bolton Wanderers. He was then released by Bolton at the age of 16 and went on trial at Manchester City. Grimes signed his first full-time contract as a trainee with Manchester City in 2006 but made no appearances for City. He joined Swindon Town on a one-month loan in March 2007, where he made four substitute appearances.
In May 2007, Grimes signed his contract with the club. At the end of the 2007-08 season saw Grimes being released by the club. He joined Millwall on 1 August 2008 on a free transfer. He scored his first senior goal in the 3–0 win at Chester City in the FA Cup First Round. His impressive display at the club earned a new contract with the club, which keep him until 2011. He scored his first league goal in a 3–1 victory away at Cheltenham Town, after the team had gone 1–0 down due to an own goal. Grimes had been the fan favourite when the supporters chant “I say, I say, I say, I say – Ashley, Ashley!”, which is reference of former Coronation Street butcher Fred Elliott.
The 2009-10 season saw Grimes first team opportunities limited. His potential move to Crawley Town was blocked by Manager Kenny Jackett, citing injury situation at the club.

Photo Walsall Advertiser
Grimes joined Lincoln City on loan making his debut on 30 October 2010 in a 2–2 draw away at Wycombe Wanderers. By late-November, Grimes loan spell with the club was extended until January, before it was extended until the end of the season. Up to and including the 8 March 2011, Grimes has played 21 games in all competitions in his loan spell. He has scored 16 goals, including a hat-trick against Stockport County in a 4–3 away win.
Despite both the manager’s and player’s, himself, wishes to sign a permanent deal, Though winning Player of the Season of 2010-11, Grimes future with Lincoln City appears to be uncertain following Lincoln City relegation to the Non-League Football Conference and ruled out playing in League Two ahead of the 2011-12 season.
At the end of the 2010–2011 season Grimes was released after his contract expired with the club.
Despite being linked with a move to Colchester United, Grimes signed a two-year contract with League One side Rochdale on a free transfer after his contract had expired at Millwall. He expressed excitement at working with Steve Eyre; he said “I have agreed to sign and I’m very pleased to be linking up with Steve Eyre once again”.
After making his debut in the opening game of the season, in a 2-0 loss against Sheffield Wednesday, Grimes scored his first goals for Rochdale when he bagged a brace in Rochdale’s 3–2 win after extra time against Chesterfield in the League Cup on 9 August 2011. Grimes have since slowly produced a goal scoring form, including a scoring two braces this season against Wycombe Wanderers and Bury. The club would be relegated to League Two after finishing twenty-four place and Grimes played under manager Eyre and John Coleman.
In 2012-13 season, Grimes was linked with a move to League One side Crawley Town, but Coleman insists Grimes remains happy at the club. Grimes, himself, turned down a move to Crawley Town, citing Coleman’s management style. Following a slow goal-scoring form and lack of playing for recent week, having featured with cameo appearances from the bench. After being on the bench for the next two matches, Grimes scored four goals (both braces) in two consecutive games against Aldershot Town and Cheltenham Town. However, Grimes’ goal scoring form began to fade and scoring ten goals, just behind Bobby Grant, who scored sixteen. At the end of the 2012-2013 season, Grimes was among eight players to be released by the club. After leaving Rochdale, Grimes signed for Bury in June 2013 on a two-year deal. Grimes was previously linked with a move to Rotherham United.
However, Grimes struggled in the first team, having been overshadowed by strikers and went on to make 18 appearance in all competitions. Grimes was also said to have fallen out with manager Ronnie Jepson. As a result, Grimes was placed on the transfer list. However, on 24 July 2014 ahead of a new season, Grimes left Bury by mutual consent.
On 25 July 2014 – the following day after having left Bury – it was confirmed that Grimes has signed a one-year deal with Walsall. Grimes made his debut for the Saddlers in a 1–1 draw against Port Vale in their first game of the season on 9 August 2014. On 1 February 2015, Grimes scored his first goal since April 2013 in a 1-1 home draw againstGillingham.

Thomas Godfrey (15 January 1904 – 1983) was a Scottish footballer who played in the Football League for Stoke City, Swindon Town and Walsall.
Godfrey began his career with his local club Stenhousemuir before joining English club Stoke City in 1927. Two poor seasons with Swindon Town followed as the “Robins” failed to make much of an impression in the Third Division South and Godfrey went on to play non-league football with Folkestone and Worcester City.

Walsall player 319. Claude Gnakpa Johouri

Claude Gnakpa Johouri (born 9 June 1983 in Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône) is a French footballer of Ivorian descent who is currently plays for Salgaocar F.C. in I-League. He plays as a Striker.
Beginning his career as a trainee at Montpellier HSC, Gnakpa then played for French lower league sides before moving to Spain in 2003 to play in the reserve teams of La Liga sides Racing de Santander and Deportivo Alavés. In 2006, he moved to Switzerland for a short time to play for top-tier club FC Vaduz. He moved to England in 2007 to play for Swindon Town, though never made an appearance. He subsequently signed for Peterborough United, where he was used as a defender, then for Luton Town on a free transfer in 2008. At Luton, Gnakpa received notability for scoring the winning goal in the club’s 2009 Football League Trophy Final victory, securing Luton’s first success in the competition. Since the 2009–10season, Gnakpa has been utilised almost solely in a wide position, using his combination of pace, power and crossing to contribute numerous goals and assists. After he received the March player of the month, Gnakpa was named in theConference Premier team of the season for 2009–10. Gnakpa left Luton at the end of his contract in July 2011, signing for League One side Walsall.
Gnakpa began as a youth player for Montpellier HSC, then appeared for local sides Marignane and Beaucaire, before moving abroad to play for Racing de Santander B, Deportivo Alavés B and FC Vaduz. In March 2007, Gnakpa was signed on transfer deadline day by Swindon Town boss Paul Sturrock on a short-term contract. Gnakpa failed to play for Swindon’s first team, appearing only as an unused substitute in several matches, before he was released at the end of the season.
In July 2007, Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson took Gnakpa on trial. He was eventually signed by the club. The “Flying Frenchman” was quickly made a regular at London Road and with his notoriously strong tackle and terrifying pace he cemented his place in the team.

Claude
In May 2008, it was reported that Gnakpa had rejected Peterborough’s offer of an improved contract following the side’s promotion to League One, and would instead search for another club. Reportedly, Gnakpa harboured interested from Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, League Two outfit Luton Town, and Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen.
He joined the Hatters prior to the start of the 2008–09 campaign, with the club starting League Two on an unprecedented −30 points. Gnakpa scored his first goal for the Hatters in a 2–1 home defeat to Darlington on 11 October 2008. He scored the only goal of the game in Luton’s Football League Trophy area semi-final victory over Colchester United on 16 December 2008.
On 5 April 2009, Gnakpa scored an extra-time winner as Luton defeated Scunthorpe United 3–2 to win the Football League Trophy final at Wembley Stadium. In that game he was used as a winger, a position where he then played regularly during the 2009–10 season under Harford’s successor, Richard Money.
On 20 March 2010, Gnakpa scored a hat-trick in a 6–1 win over Ebbsfleet United, then continued his scoring streak with three goals in the next two games. His good form saw him awarded the Conference Premier Player of the Month award for March. In June 2010, Gnakpa was named in the Conference Premier team of the season.
Gnakpa continued his form into the next season, scoring 15 goals as Luton finished third in table, securing a play-off place.
On 1 July 2011 Gnakpa’s contract with Luton ended, and he subsequently signed a one-year deal with League One side Walsall.
On 27 January 2012, Gnakpa signed for Scottish Premier League club Inverness Caledonian Thistle on a short term contract. Walsall manager Dean Smith said that it was best to move on as Gnakpa wanted more first team appearances. Inverness manager Terry Butcher said that he was delighted he had signed him and that he was pleased to sign him after previously failing to.
He was released by Inverness in April having failed to make much of an impact during his stay.
On 5 August 2013 it was announced that Claude has signed for I League side Salgaocar F.C.

Walsall player 236. Deon John Burton

Deon John Burton (born 25 October 1976) is a professional footballer who plays for Scunthorpe United as a striker.

Born in Reading, Berkshire, Burton began his professional career with Portsmouth, with whom he made his debut in the 1993–94 season, playing in two games. Burton would play intermittently for Portsmouth over the next three seasons and scored the goal that kept the club in the First Division in a 1–0 final day win against Huddersfield Town in May 1996.
In 1997, former Portsmouth manager Jim Smith signed Burton for Premier League club Derby County in a £1 million move.
Burton would again struggle to establish a starting role at Derby, playing intermittently there with loans at other clubs including Stoke in February 2002, and a second spell at Portsmouth, which began in August 2002. He returned to Derby in September having broken a bone in his foot, but later signed for Portsmouth in December 2002 for a fee rising to £250,000 and Portsmouth were promoted at the end of the season. Burton stayed shortly at Portsmouth, but, unable to establish a starting role, was loaned to Walsall and Swindon Town, where he scored once against Wycombe Wanderers. In July 2004 he signed for Brentford, playing for them in the 2004–05 campaign and helping the club to the League One play-off semi-finals against Sheffield Wednesday as their top scorer.
In July 2005 he joined Rotherham United on a free transfer, signing a contract for two years. After scoring 14 goals in the first half of the season, including a hat-trick in a 4–0 victory against Blackpool, Burton put in a transfer request in December 2005.
Sheffield Wednesday bought Deon Burton from Rotherham United in January 2006 for a fee of £110,000. This caused much controversy amongst the Rotherham public, as Burton was alleged to have trained with Sheffield Wednesday before the transfer window opened. He had also failed to turn up at the Yorkshire derby between Rotherham and Doncaster Rovers on New Year’s Eve. He then told local radio his young children were suffering from a virus which he caught, leading to him missing games and training for the Millers. He scored his first goal for the Owls in March 2006 against Queens Park Rangers.
He went on to play a crucial part in Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship survival and returned to play against his old club Derby County on the final day of the2005–06 season, captaining the Wednesday side to a 2–0 victory with another former Ram, Marcus Tudgay, scoring the first goal.
His good form for Wednesday led to a recall to the international stage. Named as a standby for the friendlies against Ghana and England, he was eventually called up as a replacement for Watford striker Marlon King who was sent home for a breach of discipline. Burton made a second-half appearance as substitute in the 6–0 defeat to England.
Despite only scoring one goal with four months of the 2006–07 campaign gone, Burton’s second half of season form was excellent. He scored 12 more goals, making him the club’s joint top scorer for the season, alongside Steve MacLean.
Deon reached a milestone 100 career goals at club level on 26 December 2007, scoring a penalty against Burnley at Turf Moor. On the last day of the season against Norwich, with Wednesday needing a win to guarantee survival, Burton cancelled out Darren Huckerby’s opening goal with a penalty, before scoring his second, and Wednesday’s third, later in the game, which was won 4–1 by Wednesday. These two goals brought Deon’s tally for the season to nine goals in all competitions, again making him the club’s top scorer for the 2007–08 season. Burton scored his first goal of the 2008–09 season on 25 November 2008, in Wednesday’s 0–2 away win at Blackpool.
Burton joined Championship side Charlton Athletic on loan on 27 November 2008 with a view to a permanent move, Wednesday manager Brian Laws citing Burton’s poor start to the 2008–09 season for the move as well as not being able to give the player assurances over his long term future at Hillsborough. On 2 January 2009, Burton was named as a permanent Charlton player, joining the club on a free transfer.
In 2010, Burton joined Azerbaijan Premier League outfit Gabala under the management of Tony Adams. After two years and 15 goals in the 50 league games, Burton left Gabala at the end of the 2011–12 season.

On 7 August 2012, Burton signed a one-year deal at League Two club Gillingham, turning down the offer of a deal at an unnamed League One side. He made his debut for Gillingham on 18 August 2012 in 3–1 win over Bradford City. He scored his first goal for the club on 25 August in a 2–1 win away to Dagenham & Redbridge. Burton was not offered an extension to his contract and left the club.
Burton signed for League Two club Scunthorpe United on a one-year deal on 22 July 2013 after impressing on trial. He joined League Two team York City, managed by his former Scunthorpe manager Russ Wilcox, on a one-month loan on 30 October 2014. He made his debut two days later in a 1–0 away win over Cheltenham Town, but after being ruled out for two to three months with a medial ligament injury sustained in his second appearance for the club, the loan came to an end on 12 November 2014.
Burton made his debut for the Jamaica national team on 7 September 1997 in the latter stages of their 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. He finished with four goals from five games, an exploit which won him Jamaica’s Sportsman of the Year Award for almost single-handedly getting the country to the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals. However he failed to score in France. He also appeared in each of Jamaica’s games as they finished fourth in the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cupbut he failed to score. He was also in the squad that failed to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and was again included on the roster for the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
He was included in the qualifying squad for the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup, making substitute appearances but was dropped from the squad after qualification.
Burton had to wait three years for his next international involvement – coming against the country of his birth England. Good form for Sheffield Wednesday meant that he was recalled for a friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago on 27 March 2008. He came on as a second-half substitute for Marlon King in a 2–2 draw, earning his 50th cap. He kept his place in the squad for the next friendly game against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on 3 June, again coming off the bench for King in the second half, to score his side’s fourth goal a minute later and also to cross for Ricardo Gardner to score the fifth and final goal in the 87th minute of a 5–1 victory.

Walsall player 208. Trevor Junior Benjamin

Trevor Junior Benjamin (born 8 February 1979) is an English-born Jamaican former professional footballer who played as a forward from 1995 to 2012.
He is famed for being a prime example of a Journeyman footballer, having represented 29 different teams in his career, and with that making over 350 appearances in the Football League between 1995 and 2008. He most notably spent time in the Premier League with Leicester City, who he joined in 2000 from Cambridge United. He was also capped by England U21 but went on to feature for Jamaica as a full international, where he earned two caps. Benjamin has also played as a professional in the Football League for Crystal Palace, Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion, Gillingham, Rushden & Diamonds, Brighton & Hove Albion, Northampton Town, Coventry City, Peterborough United, Watford, Swindon Town, Boston United, Walsall and Hereford United.
At the age of 28, Benjamin dropped out of the professional game and firstly signed for Conference Northside Gainsborough Trinity. He has since gone on to play for Northwich Victoria, Hednesford Town,Wellingborough Town, Kidsgrove Athletic, Tamworth, Harrogate Town and Woking. In 2010 he briefly joinedAustralian semi-pro side Sunshine George Cross, but failed to make an appearance and returned to the English Non-league game where he went on to feature for Bedlington Terriers, Wroxham and Morpeth Town. Having initially been on loan at Morpeth from Bedlington, he was later appointed player-manager of the club in November 2010 and managed the club until the end of the 2010–11 season.

Benjamin grew up in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, supporting Arsenal with Ian Wright as his idol. His first club was Wellingborough Colts where he excelled as a striker, gaining representative honours with Northamptonshire. His potential was recognised and he played a friendly for Kettering Town, with his brother Richard. Trevor played in their youth team then started scoring regularly for the reserves.
He then signed as a trainee for Cambridge United where he made his professional début as a 16-year-old, against Gillingham in a 0–0 draw, during his time there he scored 46 goals in 146 appearances, which included the winning goal as Third Division Cambridge knocked Premier League Sheffield Wednesday out of the League Cup.
Following some impressive displays for Cambridge United, Benjamin signed forLeicester City (where his work rate and goal celebrations saw him become something of a cult figure). He was signed for a fee of £1.3 million by manager Peter Taylor, who snapped up Benjamin as a replacement for the departed Emile Heskeywho had joined Liverpool.[1]
He made his debut for Leicester City, as a substitute, in a 0–0 draw withSunderland, on 1 October 2000. Benjamin holds the record of most appearances made from the bench by any Leicester City player he also holds the record for the most league clubs played for which so far is 16 in total. In January 2005, however, new Leicester City manager Craig Levein made the decision to cancel Benjamin’s contract. The striker then went on loan at various clubs, including Crystal Palace, Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion.
In November 2003 he was loaned out to Rushden & Diamonds. He then joined Northampton Town permanently on 19 January 2005, after a few weeks on loan to the club. Trevor was later signed up by Coventry manager Micky Adams (under whom he had played at Leicester) until the end of the season.
In the summer of 2006 Benjamin was released again and later signed for Peterborough United on a three-year deal, stating his main motivation was to gain first team football. Benjamin has since made loan appearances for Watford, Swindon Town, Boston United and Walsall. Benjamin went on to sign for Hereford United on 1 August 2007. He made his début for the club in a 0–0 draw against Rotherham United on 11 August 2007. His first goal followed a week later, from the penalty spot, in a 2–1 win away at Barnet. He continued his impressive form in the first half of the season and became something of a fans favourite at Edgar Street, scoring his share of goals. However he did not start another match for the Bulls after the defeat to Cardiff at the end of January, which coincided with the arrival of Gary Hooper on loan.
On 19 May 2008 Benjamin was released from Hereford United, being told his services will not be needed in the following season, despite being the club’s third top goalscorer that season. He joined Conference North club Gainsborough Trinity on non-contract terms in August 2008, a week later after joining Gainsborough Trinity, the Lincolnshire Echo revealed the player had also been training with Cheltenham Town. Despite this Trevor was released by a ‘disappointed’ Steve Charles after just three appearances for Gainsborough Trinity, with the Blues noting that the Jamaican International had under performed in his games.
Benjamin had trials with Cheltenham Town, Gillingham and Bournemouth at the start of the 2008–09 season, but failed to earn a contract at any of the three clubs. Bournemouth manager Jimmy Quinn said of the player, “He’s not what I’m looking for, he’s probably past his sell-by date.” On 10 October 2008, Benjamin signed for Northwich Victoria, but was released three weeks later as part of cost-cutting measures. He then made one appearance at Hednesford Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division,] after a few games for the club he was released. A couple of weeks later, Benjamin moved further down the non-league ladder to sign for his home town club Wellingborough Town in the United Counties Football League. He scored on his debut in the 2–2 Boxing Day draw with Raunds Town. Recent speculations have linked him, like in the summer of 2008, to Chester City.
However, Benjamin moved on to Kidsgrove Athletic in the Northern Premier League Division One South, making his debut in a 5–2 win against Brigg Town on 14 February 2009. He made 12 league appearances during the 2008–09 season, and another two appearances in the Staffordshire Senior Cup, helping them win the final on 22 April 2009. But Benjamin has recently stated that he would like a return to league football after fully recovering from his eye infection. He is currently on trial with Rushden & Diamonds in a bid to earn a contract for the new season. On 7 August 2009, Trevor Benjamin signed for Conference National newcomers Tamworth, following a successful trial period with the club.
He made his debut the following day in a Conference National away fixture against Stevenage Borough, Benjamin came on as a 79th minute substitute for midfielder Tom Shaw. The game finished in a 1–1 draw. He moved on to Harrogate Town in the Conference North, making his debut and scoring two goals in a 3–2 loss against Northwich Victoria on 3 October 2009. In his second appearance, against Droylsden, he scored again with a stunning free-kick in the last few minutes of the game. He departed in November after his rolling month to month contract was not renewed.
He made his debut for Woking in a 6–0 win against St Albans City in the FA Trophy competition, on 21 November 2009. After another two games for the Cards, he was released prior to the 5 December 2009 match against Bishop’s Stortford. He joined Bedlington Terriers in Northern League Division One on a free transfer in February 2010. The next month he joined Wroxham in Eastern Counties League Premier Division for a short loan spell.
In September 2010 he was loaned out again, to Terrier’s local rivals Morpeth Town. After two goalless appearances, the 3–0 home defeat by Marske United[28] and the 2–1 away defeat by Newton Aycliffe, he was appointed the club’s player-manager following the departure of previous manager Tom Wade. Shortly after his release he signed for Seaton Delaval Amateurs.
Benjamin was selected for the England under-21s, making his only appearance as a substitute against Mexico at Filbert Street on 24 May 2001.
He made his international début for Jamaica on 20 November 2002 against Nigeria, in Lagos.
