Alf had two spells with Walsall after beginning his career with Brierley Hill in 1887 as a sixteen year old, a year later he joined Walsall for the first time, where he stayed until he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he had his most successful time, winning an FA Cup winners medal in 1893. He was a big favourite with both Walsall and Wolverhampton fans. Upon his return to the Saddlers he was welcomed by the supporters, as he treated them to some superb wing play.
He was forced to quit football at the age of 30, due to a very bad injury to his ankle.
